Library Director Evaluation

Goals for 2021

  • Formally review and accept strategic plan.
  • Continue to develop board training and reference materials re: new building; support board in implementation of solar project.
  • Resume monthly Trustee Essentials
  • Continue to communicate with board re: MCPL system investigation
  • Resume routine policies review/update; post all policies in publicly accessible space (website).

Results Achieved

  • Strategic plan reviewed and adopted by library board on 03/16/2021;
    continued to implement parts as allowed by pandemic and staffing
    restrictions.
  • Awarded solar project grant; worked through building structural concerns
    to be able to implement grant project in 2022.
  • Communicated and acted when appropriate on MCPL system investigation; result: currently MCPL is taking no further action to leave WVLS
  • Created policy introduction document.

Goals for 2022

  • Continue working on reviewing/approving updated library policies and making available on library website
  • Support library board mid-cycle review of strategic plan, 2020-2023

Goals for 2021

  • Continue planning/advocacy for FTE benefits package for programming librarian position.
  • Prioritize strategic approach to programming: develop programs based on desired outcomes.
  • Regularly communicate useful statistics (program, library usage) and performance feedback to staff.
  • Try to retain in-person staff meeting time when transitioning back to full operation.
  • A/YA librarian is trained in presenting story hour.
  • Focus on optimizing staff time when recreating desk schedules when transitioning back to full operation.
  • Build on new flexibility and communication regarding procedures

Results achieved

  • Adult/YA programming librarian position is now FT with benefits
  • Adapted program reporting to DPI changes for 2020 annual report and for 2021 program collection (including mid-year change in preparation for 2021 annual report).
  • Report compilation of programming statistics to staff monthly.
  • Continued with weekly staff meetings during limited hours; shifted to “staff meet-up” time after full week-day reopening.
  • Hired and trained three new staff in desk clerk, children’s librarian, and technical services roles
  • A/YA librarian successfully crosstrained and continues collaborating on Story Hour
  • Children’s librarian renewed relationship with Sugar Camp school for family and 4K Story Hour
  • Staff are now all using “Chanty” online program and app for remote communication (direct and group electronic messaging)

Goals for 2022

  • Work with programming staff to develop outcome-based program measures for 2022 programs
  • Training for technical services/accounting staff (began December 15, 2021)
  • Library staff generate library goals for 2023
  • Review wage scale to assure equitable pay that recognizes both basic income needs and skills
  • Continue with cross-training for materials purchasing and processing, financial management, programming, building management, etc.

Goals for 2021

  • Continue to review budget for increased personnel costs for A/YA FTE in 2022.
  • Continue to review budget in light of string of “unusual” years.
  • Develop financial mission statements for board-controlled funds. Develop outcome-based planning for funds use.
  • Look for creative funding and revenue opportunities to enhance tax levy funds.
  • Records retention filing for construction project.

Results achieved

  • A/YA librarian position FT with benefits in 2022
  • Received increase in funding from OCLB
  • Continued to review budget for needs of still-new library space and changes resulting from changes of library use during pandemic, supply chain challenges, staff salaries/benefits, and other changes in costs
  • Presented a 0 increase budget to town of Three Lakes
  • Worked with Foundation to fund technology and other special projects benefiting the community

Goals for 2022

  • Develop financial mission statements for board-controlled funds. Develop outcome-based planning for funds use.
  • Look for creative funding and revenue opportunities to enhance tax levy funds.
  • Records retention filing for construction project.

Goals for 2021

  • Focus on updating website.
  • Review opportunities to use data to identify gaps in service and public communication.
  • Continue adapting programs and partnerships as needed through the remainder of the pandemic and recovery.
  • Continue seeking mutually beneficial partnerships for volunteer program development, recruitment, and engagement.

Results achieved

  • New website launched 06/2021
  • Development of customized portions Aspen Discovery catalog to be launched in early 2022
  • Used ALA Transforming Communities grant to hold volunteer conversations; report shared with community and regional organizations that use volunteers and to inform development of volunteer program
  • Partnered with/supported community volunteers to establish “Story Book Gardens”
  • Further developed partnership with Three Lakes Historical Museum for Three Lakes history programs and launched monthly “news clipping” enewsletter; TL Historical Society strategic planning to review role of library staff with museum programs, archives, and operations
  • Director as member of the Forward Three Lakes leadership workgroup, resulted in several community programs supporting non-profits and local organizations
  • Partner with ADRC/UWEX to promote and hold Strong Bodies strength training program in library
  • TL Waterfront Association collection – enhance and make available for circulation
  • Library volunteers independently running library programs

Goals for 2022

  • Develop logo and marketing package for website and discovery catalog
  • Launch and provide patron support for Aspen discovery catalog
  • Continue to work on streamlining and improving communication of library events on ALL platforms
  • Develop/formalize library volunteer program
  • Further clarify role of library and museum staff in managing local history collections and presenting local history programs
  • Three Lakes Genealogical Society collaboration: provide marketing and support for beginning genealogy class, book club, and other new Society programs; build out oral history project and archives
  • Forward Three Lakes: community volunteer
  • Continue to identify opportunities for mutually beneficial partnerships

Goals for 2021

  • Resume weeding now that we have somewhere to put weeded books.
  • Finish reorganizing of book sale space; consider offering personal shopping events once organization is complete.
  • Work with staff on developing additional kits.

Results achieved

  • Developed/revamped children’s kits (6 added in 2021)
  • Director took over and revised and streamlined book/materials purchasing process
  • Continued to regularly weed books to balance with book purchasing
  • Began training children’s librarian in youth non-fiction collection management; begin nonfiction weeding and updating
  • Regularly screening weeded books and donations and sending to Better World Books; $265.61 received
  • 4th of July, Pumpkin Fest, and Jingle Mingle used book sales

Goals for 2021

  • Complete training for technical services position
  • Collection development training for children’s librarian; work with children’s librarian and desk clerk to weed/update youth nonfiction
  • Adult non-fiction collection development
  • Add “Automatically Yours” children/youth authors to purchasing routine for new books by core authors
  • Review book purchasing budget against increased costs and additional shipping costs vs. circulation

Goals for 2021

  • Final approval for strategic plan.
  • Continue to review strategic plan and action items.
  • Begin long-range planning for major capital items; landscaping “endowment,” etc.

Results achieved

  • Strategic plan reviewed and adopted by library board on 03/16/2021; continued to implement parts as allowed by pandemic and staffing restrictions
  • Did not move forward on long-range capital planning

Goals for 2022

  • Mid-cycle review of strategic plan, 2020-2023
  • Begin long-range planning for major capital items; landscaping “endowment,” etc.
  • Plan and possibly complete library landscaping project

Goals for 2021

  • Establish volunteer recruitment and training.
  • Follow results of strategic planning; begin process of reestablishing Friends of the Library as appropriate.
  • Hold joint meeting with Three Lakes Public Library Foundation during strategic planning process and/or for other large initiatives.

Results achieved

  • Initial discussions with Foundation re: strategic planning for Foundation funds and purpose (now that building project is complete)
  • Did not establish volunteer training or begin Friends of the Library recruitment
  • Did not hold joint Strategic Planning meeting with TLPLF, etc.

Goals for 2022

  • Joint meeting with TLPLF, library board; consider strategic planning for TLPLF

By the end of 2022, I wish to have…

…my Continuing Education documentation updated and submitted (drop deadline: September 2023).

…print management and public computer sign-in software installed and running.

…a distinctive and attractive new library logo and updated image for use on webpage, discovery catalog, etc. (one worthy of our new building)

…completed memorial garden and landscaping on the north side, and a list of donation options for donors wishing to remember a loved one in the space.

…definitive direction on a solar project and building battery back-ups installed to support building and services during a power outage.

…an equitable salary scale for employees that reflects the value and skills of employees.

…an affordable health insurance package for full-time employees that offers a balance between employer/employee cost and benefits

…library bank accounts located at a convenient location that provides the local services we need.

…a shared public archive of digitized images and documents with the Three Lakes Historical Museum in place and being expanded upon.

…progress towards a shared archive of physical documents and images with the Three Lakes Historical Museum.

…a growing volunteer program with successful onboarding of new volunteers into a variety of roles that match interests and skills balanced with the time needed for staff to provide support.
